Deciding whether to have your child take the 11+ exam is an important decision and should be based on careful consideration of various factors. The 11+ exam is typically used in the UK as an entrance exam for selective grammar schools and some independent schools. Here are some factors to consider when making this decision:
1. Your Child's Academic Abilities:
Consider your child's academic strengths and weaknesses. Is your child performing well in their current school? Do they enjoy learning and have a good work ethic? The 11+ exam is designed to assess a child's academic aptitude, so a strong academic foundation is important.
2. Your Child's Interests and Goals:
Discuss your child's interests and future goals. Are they interested in attending a grammar school or an independent school that requires the 11+ exam? Make sure the decision aligns with their aspirations.
3. Local Education System:
Research the education system in your area. The 11+ exam is not universally used, and its importance varies by region. Some areas have grammar schools that use the 11+ exam for admissions, while others do not.
4. Timing:
Consider the timing of the exam. The 11+ exam is usually taken in Year 6 (when a child is around 10 or 11 years old). Ensure your child is adequately prepared for the exam if you choose to go ahead.
5. Exam Preparation:
Assess your child's readiness for exam preparation. Some children may thrive with test preparation and the challenges of the 11+ curriculum, while others may find it stressful. Be aware of the potential impact on your child's well-being.
6. Alternative School Options:
Research alternative schools in your area, including non-selective schools or those with different admissions criteria. Consider whether there are schools that might be a good fit for your child's needs and interests.
7. Support and Resources:
Determine whether you have access to the necessary support and resources for 11+ exam preparation. This may include tutoring, practice materials, and a supportive learning environment.
8. Your Child's Feelings:
Talk to your child about their thoughts and feelings regarding the exam. Their input and comfort level with the decision are important factors to consider.
9. Long-Term Perspective:
Consider the long-term implications of the decision. Think about how attending a selective school might affect your child's education, social life, and future opportunities.
10. Consultation:
Seek advice from teachers, educational experts, and parents who have experience with the 11+ exam. They can provide valuable insights and guidance.
Ultimately, the decision to have your child take the 11+ exam should be based on a comprehensive assessment of your child's abilities, interests, and the available educational options in your area. Keep in mind that every child is unique, and what works best for one child may not be the right choice for another.
